On Sunday, 17th April, Fosseway Bowls Club opened their green for the new season with President’s Day.
Before the proceedings started, a new flag was raised by club member, Gordon Willcox, who supplies wine for an annual competition. The monies raised from this covered the cost of the flag. As the flag was raised, Bob Jenner drew on all of his musical experience to play Reveille on his bugle. This year there was a change, whereby the President challenged a team captained by the new Ladies Captain, Carole Jenner-Timms, instead of the usual fixture between the President and Club Captain.
A game of spider, where each player stands with one foot in the ditch and sends one bowl each towards an object in the middle of the green, saw the afternoon get off to a good start. This was won by Allen Durnford, who was presented with a bottle of gin, a tonic water and a lemon.
56 players participated in the match, which meant that seven rinks were required. It was good to see the green being so occupied.
The result went with the President’s team by a small margin. However, as expected, being the first game of the season, there were a few wrong bias’s bowled, which meant the guilty ones placed a pound in the Wrong Bias Pig.
After the conclusion of the match, everyone retired to the club house where players were joined by guests. A three course meal was then served to seventy people. This was prepared and cooked by Vice President, Tony Cooper, ably assisted by his wife, Diana.
Prizes were then given to the winning President’s and Ladies Captain’s rinks. The President also presented Tony and Di with a thank you gift and to Della Nation, who did a marvellous job as a relief bar person.
Grateful thanks to everyone who helped make the day such a success.
