Well the week started off with the Monday Club night, when it was decided who should go through to the final on Monday 18th September. This competition has been running all season, so please come up and support the two teams who are competing.

Tuesday was the most horrendous evening weather-wise. It rained and rained and then rained some more, but the bowlers still played on. Eight teams of triples played eleven ends in the Janet Norman Trophy, after which it was decided that the semi-finals and final should be put off until the Wednesday, when hopefully the weather would be better. Thank goodness it was. The semi-finals were played in good spirits, Dave Yarlett’s triple beat Mike Poulter’s and Roger Meadows’ team beat Reg Morgan’s on the last end by one shot. The hot soup and bread was very welcomed before the final. The final was played and the runners-up were Barbara Thatcher, Alan Scott and Dave Yarlett and the winners were Sue Yarlett, Sheila Davis and Roger Meadows.

A full day of bowling started at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The first game was the two-wood pairs between Mike and Thelma Chun and Dave and Sue Yarlett. After winning one set each, the game went into a three-leg play-off, with each winning one leg and Dave and Sue winning the deciding leg. At the same time Steve Watson beat Doug Ball 21 – 8 in the Novices’ Cup. Lunch was then served (thanks to Tony and Celia).

After lunch The Ladies’ Championship was played between Carole Jenner-Timms and Sheila Davis, with Carole winning after a well-fought game. The Men’s Championship was an excellent game between Dave Yarlett and Steve Watson. This went to 20-19 to Steve, with Steve holding shot and Dave’s last bowl taking the jack back and so picking up the needed one shot to draw level. Dave won the last end and so won the Men’s Championship.

The club triples was played between Richard Andrews, Reg Morgan and Thelma Chun against Dave Cocks, Steve Watson and Anne Morgan. Dave, Steve and Anne came out as winners.

On another rink Dave Yarlett played against Ray Soby in the Over-70s cup, with Dave winning.

Sunday started with Carole Jenner-Timms and Sheila Davis playing the Ladies two-wood competition. Carole led but Sheila caught up and going into the last end, they were drawing 13 each. Sheila had the shot needed to win, but Carole touched Sheila’s wood and just crept in to win.

After a lovely two-course lunch, provided by Tony and Celia, it was back to the bowls green.

Dave Yarlett met Carole Jenner-Timms in the Club Open Championship and Dave won. On the next rink Anne and Reg Morgan played the Invitation Pairs against Sheila Davis and Ray Soby. Sheila and Dave won.

The last game of the day was between Dave Yarlett (again) and Bob Jordan. This was the 101 competition, which Bob won. This was the end of a wonderful Finals Weekend. Thanks must go to Dave Yarlett and John Nation for organising this. Also thanks to Celia and Tony for the catering, Ray for the bar and the ladies who manned the tea and coffee table.

We now look forward to Captains’ Day, which is the last bowling event for this year. Carole and Roger are looking forward to seeing you all next Sunday.

Mike Poulter would like to thank everyone who helped in finding his “missing” bowls shoes.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Captains’ Day.
