The heat goes on, and with so many bowlers melting, many of the games are being shortened before we all dissolve into puddles on the parched greens. The only good thing to be said about it is, that little effort is needed to send our woods flying towards the jack – unfortunately, it also means that often they hurtle onwards into the ditch!
Two home games for our Ladies this week: the first, on Tuesday, was an NSL game against our friends from Alexandra Park. It was a tight game on the challenging green, but Alexandra seemed to cope better than our girls and ended up winning 6–4 by just two shots. Thursday, and we welcomed Castle Cary Ladies to Norwest for a Wild League game. This time, our girls seemed to have mastered the green a little better and looked set to be on the way to a 12–0 win, however, everything changed on the last end. On rink two, a last end rally for Castle Cary saw them draw, while on rink one disaster struck: our girls were holding three shots; all they needed to win, when our Captain, Ann Woodham, sent her last wood down which picked up the jack and sent it flying backwards to give Castle Cary the two shots they needed to win the rink! Overall, we won 9–3 after an extremely hot and highly amusing afternoon, and it leaves me with just one more thing to mention: For sale: one Ladies Captain. Any offer considered!
It’s not been a good week for our lads: On Tuesday they played their Round Four game in the Turnbull Cup. The game was played at home, but unfortunately our lads lost, as they just couldn’t manage to break down a very strong Bloomfield side. We wish them well in the next round. On to Wednesday, and it was away to Fosseway for a Mid-Somerset League game. Another lost game, but they did manage to get three of the sixteen points on offer. Finally, Saturday and off to Winscombe for a friendly game, which turned out to be really friendly – as both teams scored 72 to draw the game.
Sunday and we were set for the Cecil Jones Club competition, however, due to several factors it was decided to play the Monica Trophy instead. This is a Two Wood Competition and therefore, would take less time to complete in the soaring temperature. The victor of the afternoon was Dave Hill, who beat John Mallison in the Final. Thanks to Mike for organising the game.
