I have to say it’s very flattering the number of people who read my bit in the Journal, the proof of which I soon find out when I get it wrong and yes, I know I’ve done it again. In last week’s issue, I gave Purnell 14 points and our lads two, when they played a reorganised MSL game, in actual fact, the score went the other way and Norwest had the 14 points and won the game. Apologies to Purnell, but we’d like the points back! It’s proving to be a very difficult season for our Ladies, although we have welcomed some new members, we are still desperately short of lady bowlers and have therefore had to cancel several games. Tuesday’s NSL game against Weston, Bath was one such casualty and this week, both Tuesday’s NSL game and Thursday’s Wild League games will also be cancelled. We did manage to field a team for a Wild League game away to Castle Cary and although it was a very enjoyable game, we only managed to claim one of the 12 points on offer. However, the tea and delicious cream scones after the game made it worth the journey.
And now the lads. Well, what can I say? It’s proving to be a great season so far for the boys and the successes just keep coming. They started off the week with a friendly against our old mates from Purnell and after a truly friendly game, Norwest claimed their first win of the week. This was followed by two MSL games, the first against Paulton, which the lads won 16–0 and the second against Prattens, which they won 12–4. They continued in winning mode in their Somerset County League East games with the A team playing at home to Bloomfield B and taking all 12 points while the B team played away to Knowle C and won 11–1. A great week, let’s hope that I’ve got it all right and the winning streak will continue.
This week, there were two club competitions. The start of the 101 competition on Monday evening and the Cecil Jones on Sunday. I have to say, the turn out for both of these was disappointing to say the least. We only had eight players for the 101 and twelve for the Cecil Jones. Come on Norwesters, where are you all?
The weather on Sunday for the Cecil Jones was on the whole sunny, although we did have to run for cover a couple of times, but overall it didn’t ruin what turned out to be a very enjoyable
afternoon. The competition is played on a knockout basis and the atmosphere on the green was really friendly with lots of banter. Ann Woodham and Mervyn Ashman won through to the final and after a hard fought contest, Ann claimed victory with Merv, a worthy runner up. Well done to all who took part, thanks to all who turned up to support us and a big thank you to Mike, who organised us all.
