We had a super start to our week at Norwest when we welcomed the members of our local SWALLOW group to our green for a taster session of bowls.
After a shaky start, they soon got into the swing of things and it turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable time for both our helpers and the girls from SWALLOW. I have to thank Ann, Kath and Penny for their help during the evening.
Our Ladies struggled on this week: on Tuesday, they played a friendly against Stothert & Pitt, and on Thursday, it was a NSL game against Purnell – both of which we prefer not to dwell on. Never mind, girls, as long as you enjoyed the games, that’s all that matters.
Our menfolk are faring rather better. Although they didn’t fare so well in their first MSL game of the season, losing 4-12 to Frome Selwood, they came up trumps in their County League games on Saturday. The A team beat Knowle A claiming eleven of the twelve points on offer, while the B team took ten of the twelve points when they played Keynsham B. Well done, lads.
I’m in trouble yet again: I’ve had my knuckles rapped. Apparently I didn’t mention our lads who took part recently against Street, in the preliminary round of the National Men’s Two Fours competition and won through to Round One, where they will meet Yatton. Good luck for the next round, lads, but just a word in my defence – if you don’t tell me what you get up to, I can’t pass it on!
As for the mixed games, I can report further success when bowlers from Alexandra Park joined us on our green on Friday evening for our fist MMSL game of 2019. It was a brilliant game, very friendly and thoroughly enjoyable, with Norwest winning 10-2.
For our second mixed game of the week on Sunday, we mounted our coach for our away day to Torquay. It was somewhat overcast and looking decidedly as if some rain was in the offing, but we were lucky and it remained dry with even a glimpse of sunshine.
Our hosts at Torquay Bowls Club made us very welcome and everyone enjoyed a great afternoon of bowls, with varying degrees of success. Overall, Norwest came out the victors, with Nigel’s rink of Dave, Chloe and myself taking the money for ‘best rink’.
Thanks to Mary and Martyn for organising the trip and to our driver, Bill from John Martin coaches, for making the day such a great success.
