On Monday evening we welcomed the County Patrons to our rather damp green for our annual skirmish for the Len Hilliard Trophy.

As usual, when we play the Patrons, there was a great atmosphere on the green, but that doesn’t mean the competition was any less hard-fought. The final victory went to Norwest, who reclaimed the trophy after last year’s defeat with a decisive win.

Well done to Martin, Mark, Sandra and Dave for claiming Norwest’s highest-winning rink. After the game, the players were treated to a delicious chicken dinner with fruit pie and ice cream to follow. Thanks go to our cook, Mary, and her helpers, Sue, Joan and Lin, for their excellent culinary skills, and to all the bar staff who kept the spirits high and the banter flowing.

We hosted two Floodlight Charity League games this week. The first, on Tuesday, saw Purnell playing against Frome PS, and the second, on Thursday was the Final between Frome and Norwest. It would seem that the boys from Frome like our green, as they won both games, carrying off the League Trophy for the second year on the trot.

We at Norwest would like to say a huge thank you to all the bowlers who came to Norwest to play in the Floodlight Charity League. Thanks to your amazing generosity we raised a staggering £460 on the raffle, which will go into the pot for this year’s charity, ‘Helping Henry’, a local boy who suffers from cerebral palsy spastic diplegia. A very worthy cause.

The weekend saw Norwesters out in force when they gathered to fight out the final games of the club competitions. Thank you to all who came along to support the players, it was great to see so many of you, and what a treat you had. There were some real hum dingers to keep you on the edge of your seats.

Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to those who came second. And a big thank you to all who helped to raise £30 for club funds by polishing off all the pasties and hotdogs!

And finally, a reminder of our last few games: This Saturday, 21st September, we have a friendly away to Alexandra Park, for which I think we could still do with a few more names. On Sunday it is Captain’s Day, and on Monday the Ladies have their last North Somerset League game before the green is finally tucked up for the winter.
