So where did it go? It seems only yesterday when I was waxing lyrical about the start of the 2016 season and the long hot summer to come and now it’s gone! On the whole though, the bowling was good, but I’m not sure I can say the same about the summer.

With only a couple of tail end games to play, our ladies finished off the season as they started, with really enjoyable games, but no points to their credit. Ah, well girls, not to worry, things are looking brighter as regards new lady members and hopefully, all our injured ladies will be back with us for the 2017 season.

While the ladies struggled, it was a very different scenario for the lads. Their last game of the season, a friendly away to Alexandra Park was, as usual, a real treat. It’s always great meeting up with our old friends from Alex and this one was no exception. Our lads came away with a victory winning on four of the five rinks.

Both our A and B teams did brilliantly this season with the B team gaining promotion, while the A team only lost out with the very last league game of the season. Well done lads. Our results in the MSL and MMSL leagues were not so glowing, but overall, the whole season was an enjoyable one and as Captain Mike said: “I think all Norwest Bowlers should be proud of themselves and their club.” We might not be the high flyers of the area, but when it comes to a good friendly club, that’s definitely us.

And so to our last 2016 game, Captain’s Day. The weather as usual was changeable. At the start of the afternoon, we saw members running for their wets, but by halfway through, the sunglasses were on and it turned into a beautiful afternoon. The atmosphere on the green was great with lots of banter and much merriment, which continued on into the clubhouse where members enjoyed a superb buffet and much liquid refreshment. Thanks go to Val and Mike, our captains for putting their hands in their pockets to pay for the buffet and to Sue, Mary, Lynn and Doris for doing the work. Great job as usual girls. Thanks also to Brian and all the bar staff and to anyone else who helped and especially Paul for organising the game. The spider competition was won by Ann Woodham who won a badge and the resulting collection went to the Blind Bowlers Charity. It was a good day for Ann as she also carried off the trophy for best woman bowler while the best ‘man’ went to Jack Vine, our youngest member. The coveted wooden spoons went to Maggie Roberts and Paul Latchem. Overall, it was a great afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
