It’s been a very busy week at Purnell Bowls Club, with National or County games nearly every day.

For the Men, the next round of the Somerset County League resulted in the A team losing by only four shots against last year’s county champions, Ilminster. The B team went on its winning way, beating Norwest A by 31 shots to be clear at the top of the East One League, but unfortunately, the C team suffered their first loss against Alexandra Park A.

In the National competitions the pair of Don Dart and Hugh Lorimer beat another Purnell pair of Jim Towells and Brian Wyatt in a closely-fought game, winning by two shots to progress to round five. The National Men’s Fours produced two teams progressing to the area Quarter-Finals, namely the team of Jim Towells, Don Dart, Denis Skehan and Hugh Lorimer and the team of Terry Priddle, Mel Bowen, John Matthews and Paul Curtis.

The Ladies, meanwhile, played Fosseway BC in the latest round of the county Southey Trophy and came out second best, losing by three rinks to one. However, they had more success in the NSL, winning by two rinks to one against Norwest.

The Mid-Somerset Mixed League got underway, and Purnell had a healthy win over Bloomfield by forty shots, winning on all rinks.

The Friday evening social nights continue, so we invite anyone who would like to give this very social, yet competitive, sport a go to come along next Friday, 1st June to find out what Purnell Bowls Club is all about. Failing that, you can contact Jan Dart on: 01761 471019 or visit our website: www.purnellbowls.co.uk for more details.
