All too soon, the Indoor Bowls season at Purnell Bowls Club has come to an end, and members have returned to their outdoor clubs for the summer outdoor season.
But the indoor season ended on a climax, when thirteen-year-old Cameron Bowen represented Somerset County in the National under-eighteen triples double-rink competition. Having beaten all the local counties, they went to the National Finals in Nottingham, and on beating Lincolnshire in the Semi-Final, they then went on to take the national title by beating Leicestershire in the final.
The other highlight for the club was that the Men came runners-up in Division Two of the County League, and so are promoted next year.
So, the summer outdoor season has got underway in some glorious weather, and the club is striving to introduce those who have not experienced the game of bowls to our sport. It’s a game for all ages, as can be seen by our successful youth section. We have members from nine to ninety years of age!
It is an ideal opportunity – especially for those who have just retired from football, netball, cricket or other sports – to keep an active body and mind with a game that is not only a social outlet but can continue to give you that competitive element.
With that in mind, the club is holding an Open Day on Saturday, 4th May from 10 a.m. for all ages. You can come along and have a go as well as enjoying light refreshments with us, and hopefully enjoy what is one of the most popular sports in our area.
