Another busy week at Purnell Bowls Club started Monday with the 27-year-old open 4s competition and what a day it was.
It was one of the finest days of the season so far, there was wall to wall sunshine throughout the day, some of the competitors found the heat very tiring. It went right down to the last game to decide the winners, with John Pritchard’s four from Frome Park walking off with the title.
President, Bryn Hawkins, praised John Hansford for organising a superb tournament, also a thank you for all the hard work put in by the ladies who provided a great lunch and the bar/kitchen staff, who worked hard all day, he then went on to present all the winners with their prizes.
The ladies had a good week, in the league they beat Prattens 12-0 at home, then went away to Frome Selwood and won 12-0 again. Then it was the short distance to Keynsham to play them in the County Fear Cup and what a nail biting ending with the Purnell lasses winning the game 55-50.
It was not such a good day for the ladies on Sunday, travelling to Frome Park, they only manged a win in the pairs, so lost the County Southey Cup game 4-1, perhaps a game too many in the week.
The men keep up their tremendous run, starting on Wednesday, they travelled to local rivals, Norwest, in the Mid-Somerset League. Knowing a good win could win them the league, they played really well against a team who had beaten them at Purnell two weeks ago, they had their revenge, taking 15-1 on points, winning on 3 rinks and drawing on one.
Saturday was another great day for the club, the Men’s A team entertained Weston Bath at home, with only one rink winning by a big margin and the other two looking as though they would lose, it looked like it was going to be just 8 points, but what a great rally by the lads, pulling out all the stops and ending up winning on two rinks and drawing on the other resulting in a very good 11-1 win in points.
The B team travelled to Prattens winning on two rinks and losing on one gaining 10-2 on points. The A and B teams are both heading their respective leagues, the C team lost at home to Bath C gaining just one point from a drawn rink and in a very close game only losing by 7 shots overall.
There was a great evening of entertainment at the club’s social night on Friday when Bristolian, Brad Stevens, came along to sing songs from the 50s and 60s which suited the gathering down to the ground.
