Despite the very cold and damp conditions, both the Ladies and the Men are now well into their summer programme, with the Ladies beginning their league games and the Men continuing with their Friendly games.

Unfortunately, the Ladies have not had the best of starts; with their first match cancelled, because the opposition could not raise a team, and then losses in their next two League games against Bath and Frome Park. Early days yet and hope for improvement!

The Men, meanwhile, have had a further two Friendlies. Firstly, against Victoria from Bath, where a close game in bitter conditions resulted in a six-shot win, with a good result on Hugh Lorimer’s rink.

Last Saturday, the Men hosted the lads from Yatton, and had a good win on three rinks out of four where Paul Curtis, Denis Skehan and Jim Jones were skips on the winning rinks.

As well as providing four rinks for the game, sixteen other men took part in a two-rink game which gave Men’s Captain, John Matthews, an excellent opportunity to assess the early form of the members, especially as the new Somerset County League programme starts in two weeks’ time.

This coming Friday, 4th May, the social evenings commence at the club, with the introduction of the new Friday Night Triples League, followed by social events in the clubhouse.

As usual, if anyone would like to give this very social-yet-competitive sport a go, come along next Friday evening or contact Jan Dart: 01761 471019. Failing that, visit our website: purnellbowls.co.uk
