Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club (CPCC) have had a fantastic start to their season by winning two important matches – and there will be more to come.
There are two main games of croquet – Association and Golf – and CPCC have already won in each. National Croquet Day (Sunday, 12th May) is your opportunity to try croquet for yourself.
Golf croquet is a game where, using a long handled mallet, you hit a ball through a series of hoops, or stop your opponent by hitting them away. The game takes fifty minutes and a team can play six or seven games in a day.
On 23rd April, we welcomed a team from Leighton Linslade (near Milton Keynes) as part of a UK-wide Murphy Shield competition. After a series of singles and doubles matches, with very close results, CPCC came through with a score of 4-3.
Association Croquet uses the same lawn, but all the balls have to go through all the hoops. It is a more tactical game and can take up to three hours. On 12th April, a team went to Nailsea near Bristol to compete in a Regional Competition with many other teams.
This was a game of ‘short croquet’, where you only have to score half of the hoops, played on a small lawn. The whole series is in four divisions and, after a series of hard fought games, the CPCC team gained promotion to Division One. This is an astounding result as the clubs has only been playing Association for three years Croquet is a sport everyone can play at all levels and abilities, from the social club player to a world champion. Men and Women play on equal terms, and coaching and equipment is free – all you need is flat soled shoes. Let’s not forget the social activities you’ll find at Camerton and Peasedown.
