WHEN six Camerton and Peasedown High Handicap Golf Croquet players, and non-playing captain Peter Buchanan, made the trip to Bristol on a very hot and sunny day, they found Bristol’s lawns were bone-dry and lightning fast - with some unpredictable slopes.

It took the CPCC players some time to used to the conditions and they were 9-1 down at the lunch break; they did, however, score four wins in the afternoon. The weather became ever more oppressive and, with the games score at 13-5 to Bristol and everyone wilting in the heat, it was agreed to call it a day.

For CPCC Chris Simons contributed two wins, Ray Cohen and Trish Naish one each and there was a win for Max Crofts on his team debut. Bristol’s most successful player was Andy Bailey who won all four of his games despite, or maybe because of, his handicap of 14.

There was a much closer result when a CPCC High Handicap team of four players, again led by Peter Buchanan, travelled to Weston-super-Mare on yet another stiflingly hot day.

In view of the weather and the Camerton and Peasedown team having just the minimum of four players, it was agreed to play 16 games rather than 20. On the bone-dry and somewhat uneven Bleadon lawns, CPCC came away with a hard-fought 8-8 draw, winning 3 doubles and 5 singles.

Trish Naish and June Farley each contributed to four wins with Sue Wagstaff and Chris Simons completing the rest.

Weston fielded six players, with high-handicappers Mary Cole and Steve Browning (both HH16) each contributing to 3 wins.

CPCC will continue holding Roll-Up-and-Play Sunday afternoons during the school summer holidays. Families are welcome to come and try the game from 2.0pm. This opportunity will also be available on the first Sundays of every month during the autumn. https://camertonpeasedowncroquet.co.uk/.
