At the recent AGM, members of Midsomer Norton Cricket Club paused to remember and pay tribute to Chris Tabb.
Members had attended the Thanksgiving Service for Chris’s life earlier in the month, and those present at the AGM echoed the sentiments expressed on that occasion that Chris, in addition to being one of the club’s greatest ever players, was the warmest and most generous person you could hope to meet. Chris was a gentleman who will be greatly missed.
Cricket Manager, Phil Mortimer, summed up performances on the field in 2016. For the First XI, it was a season of mainly treading water, with the performances of the club’s overseas player proving a disappointment. The contribution of Skipper, Nick Potter, was appreciated by all. The Second XI was congratulated on securing promotion under the leadership of Dan Cox; much of the team’s success was based on the maturing of several youngsters, who became better able to cope with adult opponents. The Sunday XI, led by Morgan Skipp, also gained promotion and their record included a run of nine straight wins.
The Cricket Manager also highlighted the success of the new Under-19s 20/20 competition, which saw the clubhouse packed for home games, and Youth Co-ordinator, Robin Cray, reported on the success of the club’s Friday evening training sessions for younger players. Robin thanked all of those involved in the coaching of the club’s juniors.
Phil and all the team Captains thanked the scorers, the tea and refreshment providers and others for their contributions to the club in 2016 and all those present recognised the hard work of Phil Mortimer and Mike Ashwin in preparing the pitches.
In 2017, Nick Pang will take over as 1st XI Skipper while Dan Cox and Robin Cray will continue as Captains of the Second and Third teams. Graeme King was installed as Chairman of the club, and Alan Elkington will continue as club Secretary. Members thanked him for all his work in the year just completed and members also thanked the Social Committee.
Preparations for next season will start early in the New Year. New players of all abilities are always welcome at the club.
