What a difference a year makes. This time last year, the country was in the grip of what can only be described as ‘drought’ conditions.

With temperatures in the high-twenties (that’s 70+ in old money) and sales of buckets, spades and ice cream going through the roof, this time around we have incessant rain, temperatures barely reaching seventeen degrees and the heating on in June!

The US Open briefly lifted our spirits, with Rose and McIlroy in contention on the last day, but both faded badly in the final round. A British winner is now long overdue, and it is now more than three years since Danny Willett was the last Major winner in 2016.

With the threat of rain predicted sometime during the morning, the majority of Senior Men were togged up in their waterproof trousers and jackets, just in case! In the event, they were not required, and thankfully everyone stayed dry.

Alan Taylor had the best round of the day which included six pars and back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15, with a net-67 earning him a handicap cut to thirteen.

Division One winners were Alan Taylor (67), Mike Bradbury (69) and Dave Harvey (71). The Division Two winners were Phil Toogood (76 after countback), Phil Bryant (76) and Martin Clark (77). The winners of Division Three were Steve Park (72), Vic Clarke (73) and Bill Waddington (75).

Nearest the Pin winners were Jeff Kelly on the 5th, Dave Harvey on the 8th, Steve Hobbs on the 14th and Bob Baker on the 15th.

Winners of the Twos Pot were Alan Taylor, Rob Thain, Mike Bradbury, Phil Toogood, Tim Waller and Philip Michael.

The Ladies played a Coronation Foursomes Stableford last Thursday as part of a Somerset county-wide competition. The winners have the honour of entering the draw for the next round to be played at Weston-super-Mare.

Fifteen teams battled it out; each pair playing to a joint 50% handicap on a blustery day which called for patience and skill to negotiate some tricky pin positions. No two spot birdies were recorded this week.

The winners and Farrington Park representatives for the next round were Heather Woodland and Gill Russell, who scored 35 points. Julie Toogood and Carol Jones took second place with 34 points.

Pauline Young and Maureen Charlton (33) and Terri O’Shea and Rosi Brown (32) were third and fourth, respectively.
