DAISY-Mo Hucker from Full Fat Grappling Judo and Jiu-Jitsu club entered the English Championships for the first time - and won gold.
The former St Nicholas, now Norton Hill student, had only just arrived back from Japan, where the 11 year Daisy-Mo and her 15 year old brother Cody stayed with a Japanese family while training and competing for a month. They trained in the city of Kochi under Sensai Daisuke Yoshimoto. They trained 3 hours per day, 8 times per week, submerging themselves in the culture and visiting many cities such as Hiroshima.
After a successful trip whereby Daisy-Mo won two bouts in her first Asian tournament in Imabari, and her brother won a Sumo Tournament on Shikoku Island, Daisy-Mo found herself competing in the English Championships, on London Docklands UCL university campus.
She was placed into a pool of seven girls to fight for a place on the England squad. Starting with a shock loss, she had to then win five straight to win the pool and the tournament. With 5 ippon wins, she did exactly that.
With her coach, Charmaine Alford, in her chair, she carried out her victories using a mixture of holds, forward and sacrifice throws. Daisy-Mo stormed the group and ranked number one. She saw off great judokas from London, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Bristol.
It was an absolute triumph - winning gold on her first time entering the English, first time in the under 40kg category and first time as a precadet.
Daisy-Mo is the first person to win the English Championships at the club, joining her sister Hannah who was Full Fats first athlete to win the British Schools Championship earlier this year elevating the club to new heights.
