Norton started brightly and put great pressure on the home team's try line, recycling the ball time after time, but their well-organised defence stood strong, weathering the initial onslaught. Avon put pressure on the Norton scrummage, preventing any clean ball for number eight, Ben Parker, to launch an attack.
The first time Avon managed to work their way into the Norton twenty-two, they forced a loose ball which was pounced on to gain the first score which was converted.
Avon's backs looked dangerous whenever they had possession, but Norton's robust forward play deprived them of the ball for most of the first forty minutes. A 35 metre clean break from one of the Avon centres allowed the home side's winger to score in the corner.
Shortly after half-time, Norton's fly half, Adam Sinden, after a small dummy, ghosted between two defenders to place the ball down under the posts. Ben Moon converted and it looked like Norton were back in the game.
But no matter how much pressure Norton's strong running centres, Alex Mitchard and Sam Prentice, put on the home side, their defence continued to hold. Still struggling to gain the ball, Avon made the most of the little they had and scored a third try from close range.
Consistently under pressure, Avon relieved the pressure by bombarding the Norton full back with high balls. Full-back, Ian Day, was secure, but Avon's chase was good, denying him any chance of a counter-attack. Avon scored their bonus point try with another long-range attack with their centre scoring from a forty metre break.
With the final minutes approaching, Avon kicked deep into Norton territory with the ball rolling into touch. Chasing the game, Norton took a quick line-out, but this was gathered by an Avon player to score uncontested under the posts, gaining another seven points. The game finished with the home side winning 31–7 and Norton disappointed not to turn pressure into points and also kicking too many hard-won balls away.
