Mendip’s winning run came to an abrupt halt on Saturday at Division champions, Bournemouth. Despite some gritty defending and a solid work ethic, Mendip could not match their opponents’ clinical finishing in front of goal.
The visitors absorbed a spell of early pressure, with Anna Swift defending resolutely and goalkeeper, Carrie Tiley, making a number of close range saves. Bournemouth broke the deadlock with a well-taken reverse stick strike just before half-time.
The second half saw Bournemouth take command, with some fluent passing and composure in the Mendip D. They went on to score three further goals, the best of which came from a fiercely struck penalty corner.
Charlene Vranch scored a late consolation for Mendip after a strong run down the right by Jess Smith.
This weekend, Mendip wrap up their East Division campaign with two rearranged fixtures. Saturday’s visitors to Norton Hill are Salisbury (12 noon) whilst Sunday sees the visit of Wimborne Wayfarers (also 12 noon).
