Mendip worked hard for a point against City of Bath on Saturday, in their first league fixture since Christmas.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with neither side able to break down their opposition’s defence. The best of the chances fell to Mendip’s Hayley Bullock, but her penalty corner strike missed the near post by a hair’s breadth.

City took the lead early in the second half with a shot from the top of the D which eluded several defenders and crept over the goal line.

Mendip worked hard for an equaliser, with forwards Jasmine Scott and Ellie White covering every blade of artificial grass in search of an equaliser. Eventually, Scott got the better of the City defence, forcing a foul which earned a penalty stroke. Cherilyn Carey stepped up to coolly nutmeg the City keeper to put Mendip back on terms.

Mendip’s player of the match vote was shared by hard-working midfielders, April Callow and Jess Smith and goalkeeper, Carrie Tiley, who made two crucial saves late on to secure the draw.

This week, Mendip travel to Marlborough (11.15 a.m.)
