Somerset County star and England International, Craig Adams, was the star player in the English Champion Club Championship, yet he blamed himself for Farrington's failure to win at Stoneham Golf Club, near Southampton.

The Somerset Team Champions were beaten into second place, three shots behind Walsall, from Staffordshire, after leading for much of the second round. They were third in the same event two years ago at Woodbridge.

Adams returned eight-under-par 136 (67, 69) to post the tournament's lowest individual score from 96 players, representing 32 clubs.

Somerset County Champion, Tom Small, was four-under-par after carding 140 (71, 69), while another county player, Stuart Ponfield, weighed in with a steady 152 (78, 74).

But Adams is kicking himself for a poor finish to the second round. He stood at seven-under-par on the sixteenth tee after a flurry of birdies and Farrington's victory seemed assured.

But, amazingly for such a consistent performer, the plus-four handicapper dropped four shots. He took five at the par-three sixteenth and made bogeys at the par-four seventeenth and par-five eighteenth.

The 32-year-old ink technician, from Peasedown St John, who made his international debut in France in the summer, said: "But for that finish we would have won. I was going so well and I can't remember the last time I dropped four shots in a round, let alone three holes."

It was scant consolation that, in his last tournament at Farrington, he broke his own course record by one shot in shooting eight-under-par 64.

Had they won, Farrington would have represented England in the European Champion Club Tournament in the sunshine of Cyprus next month.
