The first league match of the season brought newly-promoted Street to Withies Lane and the visitors elected to field first. Norton's openers, Dean Clifton and Alex Lear, made a steady start before the first wicket fell, when Lear was surprised by Linter's first ball and returned it directly to him.
Martin Cox (42) joined Clifton (88) and the second wicket added 120 runs in twenty overs as the pair found the boundary regularly. A huge total looked likely at this stage but, when Bartlett picked up his first wicket, this was the beginning of a collapse, which saw the loss of six wickets for only 47 runs. Bartlett was the pick of the Street bowlers, returning
excellent figures of 3–27 from ten overs. Mitchell Turner scored a valuable 22 runs, but the final total of 227 was disappointing.
The Street innings began slowly against accurate bowling. Davis, Turner, Pang and the Cox brothers each picked up a wicket in the first half of the innings, preventing the establishment of any significant partnership. The pace of the innings picked up when J. Cox joined Trotman and the sixth wicket added 53 in ten overs. Higgs then blasted 23 from only twelve balls, but the asking rate of nine an over from the last ten overs proved too much for the visitors, as Potter and Andy Cox bowled tightly to secure the win for Norton.
This Saturday, Midsomer Norton Cricket Club's First XI travel to Bishopston, while the Second XI welcome Devizes to Withies Lane. The Third XI visit Bath CC. On Sunday, the Sunday First XI visit Westbury and District CC. Bristol Lions CC provide the opposition for the Sunday Second XI at Withies Lane.
