WELTON Rovers produced their finest performance of the season to beat leaders Devizes Town 1-0 at home in the first division of the Jewson Western League in mid-week, writes Bob Allard.

Welton set the tone inside the opening minute when Will Ford’s snap shot flashed inches wide of the far post.

Devizes responded with a free kick from the right, Oaklan Buck rising unmarked but heading over the bar. The visitors continued to press, threading a ball through to Alex Henshall, who lifted his effort over from close range.

On the half hour, Welton were briefly reduced to ten men when Ross Lye was sin‑binned for dissent. Despite the setback, Welton carved out a fine chance when Harry Cade led a flowing move and fed Aaron Seviour, whose pressured shot was gathered just in time by keeper Callum Hotine.

At the other end, Will Hunter produced an excellent fingertip save to turn Henshall’s free kick over the bar.

Welton finished the half strongly, Seviour breaking through the Devizes defence only to see his goal‑bound strike denied again by Hotine. The sides went in level at the break.

Devizes’ Dan Demkiv saw a far‑post header safely held by Hunter early in the second half, while a succession of corners were bravely dealt with by the outstanding Welton back line, with Courtney Charles, Lye and Chris Pile all immense.

Welton looked increasingly dangerous, stretching the Devizes defence with quick transitions. The decisive moment arrived in the 65th minute: superb work from Ford in midfield released Matt Morris on the edge of the box. As he turned into the area, he was brought down, leaving referee Kenward with little choice but to award the penalty.

Devizes accepted the decision with minimal complaint. Morris stepped up and drilled his spot kick low into the bottom corner, sparking jubilation around West Clewes.
