Timsbury collected all three points in this Division One East of the Somerset Senior League game, mainly due to the home side’s failure to capitalise in front of goal and thanks to a fine goal-keeping display by Ben Hancock.

Timsbury started brightly and there were no signs of the lacklustre performance that was due to follow. A Bishop free kick found the head of Ellis Hancock, which narrowly cleared the bar and the willing running of Blannin was causing problems for the home defence.

After ten minutes, Timsbury scored the only goal of the game when Blannin ran on to a through ball from Craze, who held it up well on the edge of the box before laying off to Lutwama to advance into the area before placing a shot wide of Phillips in the Cary goal.

Instead of settling the away side down, this had the opposite effect, and Cary started to push them back into their own half. The pace of Morgan and Owen caused the normally solid Timsbury defence plenty of problems. Owen was unlucky when a header from a Morgan cross just clipped the top of the bar with Hancock rooted to the spot. The same combination ended with an Owen shot being well saved by Hancock. Owen then chipped the advancing keeper when put through, only to see his shot pass the post; with minutes later Morgan squandering yet another chance after shooting wide, with only the keeper to beat. Phillips became a bystander in the Cary goal, although a free kick from Hancock flew just wide, keeping him involved.

Cary continued to press in the second half and another fine shot from Owen was well saved by Hancock. Timsbury were unable to keep the ball for any length of time, giving the home side plenty of opportunities to attack without really threatening the goal. Lutwama had a great chance to increase the lead when a battling run from Blannin found him free in the box, only to see his chip clear both keeper and bar. Cullings then saw a fine run and shot flash across the Timsbury six-yard box, only to evade everyone.

It wasn’t until late on that Cary started to tire, allowing Timsbury to gain the upper hand, first a mazy run from Blannin ended with a fine save from Phillips, with only the keeper to beat, then a Parker cross was met by the head of Hancock, only to see Phillips tip it around the post.

A last push from Cary ended with a Timsbury breakaway and Blannin beat the advancing keeper to the ball on the edge of the box before squaring it to Hancock, who somehow contrived to miss the target with the goal at his mercy, which in truth, probably summed the game up.

Big D Transport Man of the Match: Ben Hancock.
