The annual Poppy Appeal Day golf tournament in the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club proved another huge success with £278 raised by members.

Well organised again by Competition Secretary, Doug Lane, the icing on the cake came at the end of the rounds with a wide selection of delicious goodies provided by Linda Hallett and Helen White. Lane gained a reward for his efforts by winning the event with a Stableford total of 40 points. Malcolm Tucker, who was second, one point behind, also received a Poppy Appeal Golf Classic Medal together with Lane, while Noel Chatfield finished in third place with 38 points.

The strangest event in the Seniors’ calendar is the pairs’ gruesome for the Broadway and Smith Cup, when good drives are unlikely to be of any use. Both players’ drive and the accompanying pair decide which ball they want the couple to play. The well deserved winners were low handicappers, Chris Appleton and Pat Cray, whose consistency throughout the round saw them return with a nett score of 63. Two shots behind were Terry Button and Allen Cheney, the latter coming in as a very last minute replacement. Howard Nowell and Frank Reeves were third with a nett score of 66.
