Timsbury Athletic are through to the last eight of the Somerset County League Cup for Premier and Division One clubs, after a hard-fought 2–1 home win over Burnham United. There was never much between the teams, but Timsbury took the chances that mattered.
The home side were ahead after ten minutes, when star man, Jack Nix, crossed from the right to an unmarked Chris Midgeley, who made no mistake from close range.
Burnham enjoyed plenty of possession, but failed to create any clear-cut chances, and long-range efforts from Paul Grant were the closest they came. At the other end, a flick from Jem Lutwama almost caught out keeper, William Lamb, but it was the visitors who continued to press, with Harrison Kidner volleying wide, and Matthew Scott shooting just wide of the post.
Eight minutes from half-time, Timsbury increased their lead with a fine team goal. An excellent tackle from Nix set it up, and Rhys Cook finished it off, shooting through Lamb’s legs for the second. Right on the interval, Ebner Heatley almost made it 3–0, but his shot was well-held by Lamb.
Timsbury had early chances to put the game to bed in the second half, but Cook shot over when clear through, and Lutwama was denied by Lamb with an equally-good chance. Midgeley too shot wide after a fluent move, before Burnham threatened at the other end with a great cross from Scott that just evaded substitute, Jamie Merrick.
With fifteen minutes to go, the visitors did get back into the game when a great strike from Captain, Russell Holley, flew past Jack Scrivens in the Timsbury goal. At the other end, Lutwama hit the Burnham post, and then there was one late chance for the visitors, with Scrivens comfortably holding Scott’s header.
Star Man: Jack Nix, Timsbury Athletic.
