WELTON Rovers returned to action in the first division of the Jewson Western Football League following their FA Vase success to gain a 1-1 draw against Warminster at West Clewes in a midweek clash that began with immediate drama.

The visitors struck within the opening minute when Charlie Walton was brought down in the box. Jordan Pinder stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to give Warminster an early lead.

Welton’s night worsened moments later as fullback Lewis Sheppard-Andrews was forced off through injury. Despite the setbacks, Welton responded with intent. Lewis Russell tested Warminster keeper Jack Amor with a low drive, then saw a curling free kick superbly tipped away.

Amor’s misjudged clearance soon gifted Russell a golden chance, but he dragged his shot wide. At the other end, Massimo Sardo kept Welton in the game, reacting sharply to tip Jack Walton’s close-range header over the bar.

The second half maintained a high tempo, though chances were limited as both defences stood firm. Welton began to dominate possession, exploiting Warminster’s fading energy. Their pressure paid off in the 78th minute when a cross caused chaos in the visitors’ box. Toby Cole was on hand at the far post to bundle the ball home and level the scores.

The game took another twist minutes later when Ashton Arlow was shown a red card following an altercation on the halfway line, reducing Welton to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the hosts held their shape and composure to secure a hard-earned point.

It was a gritty, spirited performance from Welton, who showed resilience in the face of adversity and continue to build momentum in their league campaign with three draws from their opening five matches with evidence of better things to come.
