WELTON Rovers earned their first point of the season with a resilient and disciplined goalless draw at home to Calne Town in the first division of the Jewson Western League, writes Bob Allard.

It was a determined response to the heavy defeat at Longwell Green, and the display offered renewed encouragement for the Green Army. New signing Saracen Yates impressed on his debut, bringing authority and composure to the back line.

Welton began with purpose, aided by a strong wind in their favour. Early chances came through Chris Pile, whose snap shot cleared the bar, and Kieran Smith, who saw a curling effort drift narrowly wide. Calne gradually settled, and Welton goalkeeper Jude Brown was booked after racing out towards halfway and bringing down Jack Byrne.

Brown soon redeemed himself with an excellent low save to deny William Banfield on the counter. Welton continued to press, and just before the interval Smith produced a superb run, weaving past defenders before his goal‑bound strike was saved smartly by Calne keeper Lewis Clark.

With the wind now behind them, Calne threatened early in the second half. Banfield met a cross from the left with a crisp volley that flew inches over the bar.

Welton manager Matt Williamson introduced fresh legs, and the changes almost produced a breakthrough. Substitute Oliver Tucker delivered a fine cross from the right, cleared only to Joe Gordon‑Hallett, who unleashed a stunning strike that crashed against the upright, rolled along the goal line, and was eventually cleared.

Welton pushed again late on, with Brian Moding forcing Clark into another low save from a firm header. Calne had the ball in the net in stoppage time, but referee Dyer ruled out the effort for a foul in the build‑up.

At full time, Welton’s supporters celebrated a committed team display that offered genuine optimism for progress.
