Heavy morning rain thankfully disappeared after lunch to enable the rearranged nine hole Mixed Puttsomes Competition to take place at the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club. The popular event gives the females the chance to shine in partnership with a male partner. The men take all the strokes getting to the green and the ladies then come to the fore to do the putting.
The winning pair were Main Club General Secretary, Elaine Emery, and recent Seniors member, John Appleton, with a nett 37. In second place came Vice-Captain, Gerry Rowell, and Edna Shearn, with Ken and Sue Tucker third. Tucker was also the top male player, followed by Treasurer, Colin Moon, Frank Reeves and Henry Thomas. Receptionist, Elaine Dowling, was the top scoring lady, Judith Watts was second and Marlene Phelps, third. To cap a most enjoyable afternoon, the players shared an excellent barbecue.
The Seniors' away day blues continued at Woodspring where they were beaten 4.5–1.5. Malcolm Tucker and Reeves were the only victors, winning the last hole against a gallant Bill Jones who battled through on his own to just lose one down. Rowell and Howard Nowell managed to halve their game, but that is where the good news ended. Captain Terry Button and Mike Ricketts lost 5&3, Cyril Blacker and Pete Fitch were beaten 6&4 and John Bendle and Rod Bruce went down 6&5. Arthur Bellinger and Graham Edgell were beaten 6&5, but Bellinger was forced to give up less than halfway through his round with back spasms to leave postman Edgell to fight a lone battle. Nowell won the battle from Fosseway to be nearest the pin on the seventeenth.
Later in the week, members took part in the Eric James Bogey Cup Competition. In this event, you score +1 for every nett birdie or eagle, 0 for a nett par and –1 for every bogey. A birdie on the last hole was enough to see Malcolm Tucker come out on top with +2. Mike Ricketts and John Ticehurst both finished on +1, with Ricketts coming second on countback.
