More heavy rain continues to make life difficult for golf groundsmen and the Seniors at Fosseway are grateful for the efforts put in to enable the competitions to progress. The most recent events have been the Charity Trophy which was staged in conjunction with the main club and the Broadway and Smith Gruesomes Cup.
The Seniors Section of the Charity Trophy saw success for big-hitting Ken Tucker and local artist, Frank Reeves. Together they scored a nett 48, followed closely by Denis White and John Williams (nett 49) and Howard Nowell and John Wighton (nett 50).
The Gruesome competition is one of the most frustrating golfing experiences. Hit a cracking shot straight down the fairway and it is likely to count for nothing.
One pair of golfers play alongside another pair and each person drives. The opposition then choose the ball they wish their opponents to play. That ball is used until the hole is completed with each player taking alternate shots.
The winners with an impressive nett score of 64 were Allen Cheney and Bob Smith. In second place came Bill Lester and John Ticehurst with nett 67, with Reeves again and Malcolm Tucker third, also with 67, but losing out on countback.
With some improved weather at last, it is hoped that the course will have dried out for this week's February Medal Competition.
