August is the month of fun competitions for the Farrington Park Ladies and there was a good turnout for the Scotch Foursomes. This isn’t Foursomes played whilst wearing kilts, but Foursomes played in the normal way until the last putt is holed on the first green!
The player that didn’t hole the putt, tees off on the second hole even if she teed off on the first hole. In theory, one player could tee off on all eighteen holes and her playing partner could sink all the last putts on each hole.
Twenty-three teams entered the competition; Kay Clarke and Sue Forshaw were amongst the early starters and must have thought they were playing millionaire’s golf. With a combined playing handicap of 36 they knew they had a chance to at least score on most holes.
The weather was perfect and with no other teams in front or close behind them on the front five, they had the course virtually to themselves. After a shaky start, things looked up when they scored a two spot birdie on the fifth hole for five points and this proved to be the turning point. With a great score of 22 points on the back nine holes making 38 points overall, this put them in a commanding lead to win the competition.
At the close of the competition, countback had to be employed to decide second and third places when two teams finished on 36 points, Pauline Brixey and Dawn Stacey took second place ahead of Wendy Butt and Jackie Walker, leaving Sue and Kay as the well deserved winners by two points.
Fourteen teams entered the Ahlberg Assiette Four Ball Better Ball competition on a perfect day for high scoring golf of a light wind and sunny intervals. The teams were playing off an 85% handicap, which sounds tough, but somehow the handicap for each player compliments their playing partner.
Seven teams scored 36 points or over, however, the Assiette would be decided amongst the three teams who scored over forty. Pauline Young and Maureen Charlton were the lowest handicappers in the field and scored a very good forty points to take third place, including birdies at par 5 13th and par 4 14th holes.
Issey Panton and Jane Ball scored steadily, Issey scoring most of the points with Jane contributing, including a valuable par for three points.
However, at the short par 3 15th, Issey had a fine shot onto the green and sank a 15 foot putt for a birdie, worth five points. This was Issey’s first birdie in a competition and was the only two spot birdie scored in the whole competition. This birdie helped them to a final score of 42 points and second place.
The big hitting duo of Jackie Willcox and Hayley Bullock had a great day. Combining well together, they had a birdie at the par 5 11th and six pars, and scored a
terrific 44 points to win the Ahlberg Assiette, their first competition trophy win as a pairing. Jane Ball
