WITH the condition of the course at Mendip Golf Club looking great, there have been a spate of low scoring in competitions.

About 125 men competed in the RAFA Trophy. Div 3 saw a win for Stephen Collinson with a fine net 64, with Mario Rolli 2nd with 69 and Lewis Gumbleton 3rd on 70 after count back from Eric Jordan.

Div 2 went to Trevor Messenger with 67 after count back from Simon Grant, Brian Smith and Steve Cox. Div 1 went to Rob Edney with a 66 but only after count back from Ben Cox with David Jukes 3rd with 67.

However, the trophy winner returning to form in a big way after a string of, shall we say, not so good scores, was Robert Ware with an amazing net 61. Very well done Robert. The gross prize went to Stuart Ponfield with a two under par 69 with Phil Leadbeater 2nd with 74

The Berkeley Hall annual Foursomes event again saw some excellent scoring in what is the most difficult of formats. Third with a net 71 were Mark Necker/Malcolm Srawley with Stuart Ponfield/Ryan Sainsbury 2nd with 67. However, clear winners with a brilliant 10 under Par net 61 were Danny Middle/Graham Colbourne. Again. Very well done.

Another amazing result came in the Ladies 4 ball betterball Ping Qualifier. With the majority of the results in, an excellent score of 47 points put Libby Bellew and Elaine P Richardson clear of the field, three ahead of Jenny Merrett and Susy Rudkin and the pairing of Allison Rumming and Sue Needham. However a tremendous 50 points from the last pair in secured the win all the more remarkable as they were two of Mendip’s up and coming Juniors, 11 year old Harper Howerd and 12 year old Lauren Morris. Very well done girls and the future looks bright for Mendip’s Ladies section with talent like this coming through.

The Ladies ICLteam won their latest match 4 – 3 against Mendip Spring with wins from Carol King, Anita Butcher, Lally Gibson and Ann Padley. The Friendly team also tasted success with a 5-0 win over Wedmore, wins coming from Ali Kay/Fiona Hassard, Allison Rumming/Wendy Collins, Sue Needham/Rebecca Edwards, Lizzie Wood/Min Woodward and Debbie Godwin/Susie Howe.

Fifty-fivelLadies played in the Qualifying Stableford. Div 1 went to Rosemary Brown with 41 points with Pauline Young 2nd with 39 after count back from Victoria Ham. Div 2 was won by Diane Stanton with 39 after count back from Penny Oliver and Susan Forshaw was 3rd with 37 after count back from Andrea Williams and Lulu Carolan.

Div 3 went to Julie Doyle with 41 with Carol Curtis 2nd with 37 and Eileen Masters was 3rd with 33 after count back from Nola Russell and Pat Roscow. A further nine ladies played in the 9 hole event won by Ann Kibby with 19 points with Ros Withers 2nd with 18.

The Seniors Avalon team met their first defeat of the season when visiting Weston 1-4. Mendip’s win came from Gary Quin and his partner Tony Scott.

The Seniors Friendly tam went down to a heavy defeat when visiting Bath 1-5 with their win coming from Colin Davies/Paul Godwin.
