Plenty of action to report on this week at Mendip with matches coming thick and fast.
129 men competed in the RAFA Trophy.
Division One saw a win for Dean Lewer with 69 after a four-way tie, with Dan Annable-Manzaneda second, Neil Onslow third and Ben Cox fourth.
Division Two went to Justin Seviour with 69, Paul Merrett was second with 70 after countback from Phil Butcher. Division Three saw an excellent 67 from Phil Vowles with Pete Walsh second with 68 on after countback from Richard Clifford. However, the Trophy was won this year by high handicapper, Jack Harris, with a fine net 65 which also gained him a large handicap reduction.
There were wins for Ellen Reakes, Jinhee Page, Chris Down and Anita Butcher.
The Alliance A Team entertained Clevedon B Team and ran out resounding winners, Aimee Sawyer led the way with a 7–6 victory being one over par on the front nine. Wins also came from Fran Davies, Jinhee Page, Lynne Vowles, Marian Speed, Edwina Willis and Jenny Merrett.
The Inter Club and Alliance B Teams did not fare so well, with sole
winners being Dee Garnsworthy, making her debut in an away match for the Inter Club at Wells and Chris Down for the B Team when visiting Henbury.
The Ladies’ weekly competition was a two person Texas Scramble with fourteen pairs competing, a smaller number than usual due to the number of ladies’ matches being played.
The Winners were Diane Stanton/Jinhee Page with 72, Mary Ainsworth/ Penny Oliver were second with 73 after a four-way tie leaving Dee Garnsworthy/Karen Cookson third.
The Seniors continued their punishing schedule with away trips to Long Ashton and Cumberwell.
The first brought a close 3½–4½ defeat with wins for Bryan Lewis/Kevin Carmody and Simon Brand/Alan Edwards with halves gained by Ian Vincent/ Terry Pavey and Keith Beasley/Derek Bellew. A win for Jim Scott/Martin Osborne and halves for Phil Butcher/Rod Dyson and Seniors Captain Alan Edwards/John Ellis.
Mendip gained a 4–2 win for Julia and Mike Phillips, Pauline and Alan Williams, David and Lilian Peel and Alan and Ali Kay.
