This week at Mendip Golf Club saw the annual running of the Simms Cup, with one hundred players taking part. The recent rains had softened the fairways, so the Course played longer than of late, reflected in the scoring.
Winner of Division Three was Roland Greenaway, with net seventy, Stephen Pearson was second, with 71, and Andy Parfitt, third with 72. Division Two went to Neil Bath, who recorded his best score for some time, winning with seventy after a triple countback from Liam Robertson and Chris Roe. Division One went to Philip Leadbeater with 69, after countback from Neil Clarke, with Jack Hayes third with 71. However, the deserved Cup winner with 68, with a birdie on the eighteenth, was Justin Barrow, who had been missing from the winners’ enclosure for some time.
The Mid Week Stableford attracted 45 entrants. David Cox was the Division One winner, with 38 after countback from Martin Myers, with Brian Lewis third with 37 after countback. Division Two went to Brian Smith, with 38, a point ahead of John Ellis, with Jon Tweed third with 36. Division Three went to Alan O’Leary, with 39 after countback from Stephen Lake with John Brooksbank third with 36.
The Ladies Four Ball Better Ball Stableford saw a close run affair won by Fran Davies and Karen Cookson, with 42 points, just holding off Andrea Williams and Marian Speed by a point with Jenny Merrett and Edwina Willis third with 39 after a four-way countback.
The Final of the Fanstone Cup took place between Chris Olds, playing off fifteen, and Carol Curtis, 24 handicap, both of whom had beaten much lower handicapped opponents in the Semi-Finals. Giving Carol nine shots was hard enough for Chris, without Carol holing putts from all over the green – Carol ran out the worthy winner.
The Ladies’ Weekend Medal saw another fine performance from Aimee Sawyer, playing off three, who carded a two under CSS net 74. The Ladies Alliance A Team went down to Clevedon away with Team Captain, Marian Speed, gaining a half and there was an excellent first win for twelve-year-old Ellen Reakes.
The Seniors entertained Yeovil and for the second time in recent weeks ran out 7–0 winners. Victorious for Mendip were Adrian Brooking-Clark/Mike Curtis, David Garnsworthy/Alan Evans-Jones, Andy Frampton/Philip Moores, Derek Bellew/Bryan Lewis, Brian Say/Martin Osborne, Kevin Carmody/John Cross and John Pugh/Andy Griffiths. The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin winners were Marian Speed with Lynn Cox second, Matt Bendall with Scot Butland,
second and Mark Necker with Nigel Brokenshire, second.
