Wells’ Past Captains played their annual match against the Somerset Captains in warm dry weather. After a light lunch, Wells’ Club Captain, Dean Hamilton, welcomed the opposition, stressing how pleased the club were to entertain the Somerset Golf Captains again.

In the first of eight matches, Captain of Captains, Rob Swift and Rob Coate came up against stiff opposition and were beaten.

In the next four matches Wells pairs Phil Slater and George Davis, Andy Williams and Colin Mantle, John Chillington and Malcolm Terry, Steve Rowse and Steve Bocquet all won, leaving the Wells team on the verge of victory. The next two pairs, Richard Booth and Andrew Boatswain, Dean Hamilton and Captain Elect, Mike McKay, found things difficult against strong Somerset teams. This left the score 4–3 with all depending on the last pair, Stuart Mann and Erica Klim. They found themselves three down after ten but fought back to halve the match. This gave Wells a win 4½–3½ thus retaining the shield.
