A sunny but cold day greeted the Farrington Park ladies for their recent Stableford competition.

It should have been a qualifying competition for the forty-six strong field, but the greenkeepers were planning some ground improvements, so several holes were due to be reduced in length. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for those who hadn’t fancied a qualifying competition played in winter conditions because the scoring turned out to be very low. Fairly new to golf player Jan Mahoney scored her first ever birdie at the par 3 15th hole and two other birdies were scored by Issey Panton and Jenny Howarth. The overall winner was Wendy Butt with 36 points beating Angela Hudd on countback. The most consistent player of the season, Kay Clarke was third with 33 points beating Maureen Charlton on countback into fourth place.

A reverse Bowmaker was played last Thursday; one score to count on par 3s, two to count on par 4s and three scores to count on par 5s. This sounds generous but trying to get all three players in a team to score on a par 5 was the undoing of most of the fifteen teams in the competition. The only two spot birdie of the day was scored by Viv Dickson at the 15th hole.

Four teams scored 72 points but Marilyn Cass, Sue Skyrme & Lesley Mannion took second place on countback, relegating Pauline Young, Maureen Charlton & Cynthia Miller; Lo Dallocco, Gail Proctor & Jackie Walker; Sandra Hares, Corinne Durbin & Julie Toogood into the minor places.

The winners with a creditable 73 points were Jackie Willcox, Kath Cox & Barbara Lawson.
