There was a good turnout for the Coppers’ Novice Cup, with seven Coppers (Ladies who are new to golf) competing on the Manor nine-hole course. In really windy conditions the scoring was not too bad.
First place with a gross-89 was Sue Milford, second with a gross-93 was Sue Barnes, and third with a gross-97 was Jane Tucker.
The Saturday Stableford on 28th April attracted a small number of Ladies. The wet and windy conditions meant the Duchy course ‘showed its teeth’, and no player reached the par score of 36 points. Terri O’Shea beat Clare Salter on count-back, after both ladies scored 33 points. Pauline Brixey was third with thirty points.
Spring temperatures have arrived at long last! The first medal competition of the year, a qualifying competition for the Dickenson Cup, took place in warm sunshine and a light wind. The Duchy course was in fine condition, although damp underfoot in places after the previous day’s heavy rain. This did not help the majority of the field, who struggled to make a decent score. The CSS rose from 73 to 75 to reflect this fact.
Two Ladies who bucked this trend were Pauline Young and Carol King. Pauline finished top of Division One for the second week running; five shots clear of the rest of the Division One Ladies. Carol’s fine round saw her five shots clear as well in Division Two. Both ladies received handicap reductions. Division Three was won by Maureen Goodsir.
Two spot birdies were recorded by Wendy Butt on the par-three 8th hole; Carol King, Denise Baker and Margaret Seery had two spot birdies on the par-three 15th hole.
With the white tees back testing the abilities of the Saturday golfers, different club selections were coming into play. But the scoring in Division One was of the highest quality, with Andy Killey winning on count-back from Gary Padfield, both on forty points, taking positions one and two, with Dave Forshaw taking third on 38 points. In Division Two, it was Mike Pollock with an excellent round of forty points topping the charts, with Steve Brixey a close-second on 39 points, and Ian Jones taking third on 36 points.
In rather cold conditions and brisk winds, Tom Snelling took control of Division One on Sunday with 38 points, followed in second – continuing a good weekend’s golf – by Gary Padfield on 36 points, and Lee Sparkes a close-third on 35 points. A great round from Paul Goddard on 41 points toppped Division Two, with Des Deane second on 38 points and Shaun Robinson third on 32 points.
