The Mixed Section held their second major competition, the Stilwell Salver, on Sunday, 26th May, played using the Four Ball Better Ball Stableford format off a 90% handicap.

Fourteen couples took on the challenge, battling through a fine drizzle of rain, which refused to relent all afternoon and soaked the players in the process.

A welcome return to playing after injury by Bobby Appleby was rewarded by winning the Ladies’ Nearest the Pin on the 5th hole. Paul Thomas won the Men’s Nearest the Pin on the 15th hole; the ball landing so close to the hole, he was unlucky not to have a hole-in-one!

Considering the weather conditions, excellent scores were made by the majority of the teams, but the winning places went to teams scoring over forty points.

Denise and Bob Baker and Steve and June Symonds were just pipped to second place by Steve and Pauline Brixey, who scored a fine 45 points and were the leaders in the clubhouse for a long time. However, right at the end of the field were Liz and Paul Thomas, who returned with a great score of 46 points to win the Stilwell Salver by one point.
