The Mixed Section held their third major trophy competition of the season, the Paul Harwood Trophy, on Sunday, 23rd June.
Fourteen couples played a Four Ball Better Ball Stableford off a 90% handicap on the Duchy course. Thunderstorms were promised later in the day, but did not materialise, much to everyone’s relief.
The Duchy course was in prime condition and the recent hard work by the greenkeepers is now coming to fruition, with the greens being at their quickest this year. This was reflected by the good scores returned by the participating teams.
There were two Nearest the Pin; Mike Woodward won the Men’s competition on the 5th hole and Corrina Bates nearly had a hole in one to win the Ladies’ on the 15th. Scoring was really high – so much so, that any team with a score of 43 or lower was already out of the prizes!
Countback had to be employed for the minor placings; Bobby Appleby and Mark Wintersgill, despite their score of 44 points, were unlucky to miss out on fourth place being beaten by Terri O’Shea and Shane Phelps. Third place went to Min and Mike Woodward with 45 points, beaten on countback by Rosi Brown and John Ward who secured second place.
However, the round of the day came from Rob Thain and Lin Papas. They had four birdies in their winning total of 47 points and lifted the Paul Harwood Trophy for the first time.
