The maximum number of golf clubs allowed in your golf bag is fourteen, but how many of those clubs do you actually use in an average round?

The Farrington Ladies must have thought about this conundrum as they played a Stableford competition using five clubs of their choice and a putter on Thursday, 6th February.

The weather was glorious after a foggy start; players starting their round early and were hitting their golf balls into a bank of fog that hung across the fairway on the first hole.

The sky was a bright blue, the sun warm in spots sheltered from the wind and the birds were practising their Spring songs. Forty-five players enjoyed the beautiful day and most enjoyed their golf too, despite the lack of, or maybe, because of, the number of clubs in their bag. The limited number meant that imagination had to be used to fashion a shot from them.

Terri O’Shea had a two spot birdie at the first hole and Jenny Ahlberg, Margaret Seery, Jackie Walker and Pauline Young had birdies at the shortened par 3 5th hole.

The large field was divided into two divisions. Denise Baker continued her good form of recent weeks to take first place with 34 points in Division Two. Second place went to Sandra Hares, who had been part of the winning team in last Sunday’s Mixed Section competition, with 33 points. Debbie Jones was third with 30 points.

Two points separated the winners in Division One,

Pat Roscow’s 35 points for second place was one better than Terri O’Shea’s 34 points for third.

Margaret Seery used her driver, seven wood, seven iron, pitching wedge and putter to great effect and scored a well-deserved 36 points for first place.
