The Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club are out of the Somerset Rose Bowl competition, after losing 4-1 to a strong Stockwood Vale side at Bath Golf Club.
Roger Parfitt and Malcolm Tucker won their match 2&1, but that was the end of the good news. Captain Gerry Rowell and vice-captain Martyn Cuer were beaten 3&1, Allen Cheney and Cyril Blacker lost 4&3, Barry Dugmore and Mike Weeks were defeated 5&4, while John Bendle and Terry Button were on the wrong end of a 9&8 result.
There was better news in the second social match of the season, with a 3-3 draw at home to Woodspring. Rowell led the way, pairing up with Bill Lester to win 2&1, Cuer and Button won convincingly 5&4, while Blacker and Weeks edged a tight game, finishing one up. Cheney and Howard Nowell were narrowly beaten 2&1, Bendle and Pat Cray lost 5&4, while Alan Jones and Nick Foxwell were defeated 7&6.
Members of the Seniors’ section were sad to hear of the death of John Ticehurst, who had travelled from Bradford-on-Avon for many years to play his golf at Fosseway. Ill health had limited his appearances at the club for the last couple of years, but previously to that the ardent Arsenal fan had rarely missed a club event and he will be much missed.
