It was business as usual for the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club, who followed up a heavy away defeat at Kingweston with a convincing home win against Woodbridge Park in the latest series of social matches.
Acting Captain, Cyril Blacker, set a good example at Kingweston, coming home with a 2&1 victory alongside Allen Cheney, while Howard Nowell and Malcolm Tucker achieved a half, but thereafter it was Kingweston who dominated. Graham Edgell and Bill Lester lost 2&1, John Bendle and Pat Cray and Mike Ricketts and Frank Reeves were beaten 7&5, while Brian Phelps and Terry Button went down 7&6. The 4.5-1.5 defeat leaves Fosseway with plenty to do in the second leg of the annual fixture if they want to grab the FosseKing Trophy.
There was better news at home to Woodbridge Park with a 3.5-1.5 success. Cheney and Cray led the way with a commanding 6&5 win, Bendle and Blacker were 4&3 winners, while Ricketts and Button finished 3&1 victors. Returning skipper, Gerry Rowell, halved his match alongside Brian Woodruff, but Nowell and Tucker were edged out, 2&1.
There were convincing winners in the club’s Three-Man Texas Scramble for the Continuforms Trophy. Cheney, Lester and Jack Curtis finished three shots clear with a nett total of 49. Three shots behind were Ricketts, Button and Mike Weeks. There were a cluster of teams on 53 but Cray, Bendle and Jeff Hodder, in his first competitive match since joining the club, gained third place on countback.
