It was a day for the high-handicappers, when Gerry Rowell hosted the Captain’s Trophy in the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club.
Mike Weeks came in first, with a stableford total of 43 points, followed by Alan Jones on 41 and Noel Chatfield with forty. Rowell expressed his particular pleasure as the top two were players he had been helping with their game. Geoff Hallett won the prize for the longest drive, Bill Lester was nearest the pin on the fifth and Brian Phelps collected the award for the best front nine for over-eighties.
Allen Cheney continued his good form in the Ted Cottle Trophy competition for over-seventies, winning with an impressive stableford total of 45 points. Phelps, who is also enjoying a purple patch, was second with 42, with Frank Reeves third with 37 points.
28-handicapper, Brian Woodruff, played out of his skin in Fosseway’s latest social match away to Whitley, and in partnership with Martyn Cuer, they won their match 2&1. That was where the good news ended, however, with Fosseway returning with a 5-1 defeat. Rowell and Weeks and Cyril Blacker and John Williams both lost their games 2&1, Cheney and Jones and Barry Dugmore and Phelps were defeated 3&2, while Nick Foxwell and George Underwood were on the wrong end of a 7&6 result.
Rowell said that if anyone else is interested in joining the Seniors’ section, he would be very happy to meet them, and if necessary, help them with their game. He can be contacted on: 01761 432324.
