The Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club ended their season of social matches with an away trip to Wincanton, but once again they returned with little to show for their efforts after a 5-1 defeat.
Captain, Gerry Rowell, and his partner, Howard Nowell, made a good fist of it in the first match, finishing all square, with Nowell in particular in fine form. Mike Ricketts and Graham Edgell also shared a halved game, but thereafter it was all downhill. John Bendle and Nick Foxwell lost 4&2, Cyril Blacker and Mike Weeks were beaten 4&3, Alan White and Frank Reeves were defeated 7&6, while George Underwood and Alan Jones had a difficult day, losing 8&7.
Two days later, Jones was quickly able to make amends, pairing up with Rowell to win the Roger Tabb Cup. Roger’s widow, Sybil, was in attendance to present the cup to the pair, who won the winter foursomes event with a nett score of 66. One shot behind came Competition Secretary, Brian Phelps, and Allen Cheney, with Geoff Hallett and Bob Smith third on 68.
