The Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club have won back the Fosse King Trophy after an impressive 5-1 win at home to Kingweston. The first leg of the annual contest had finished in a 3-3 draw, so Fosseway won 8-4 on aggregate.
Vice-Captain, Martyn Cuer, and 28-handicapper, Brian Woodruff, were the most impressive performers, winning 5&4, with Woodruff in particularly fine form. Bert Austen played his first game for Fosseway and paired up with Alan Vowell to win 4&2, retaining Vowell’s unbeaten record, while Howard Nowell and Graham Edgell triumphed 3&2. In closer encounters, Captain, Gerry Rowell, and Malcolm Tucker won 2&1 and Mike Ricketts sank a late vital putt to enable him and his partner, Brian Phelps, to finish one-up. Alan White and John Waters didn’t have their best days, losing 4&3.
Fosseway were less successful in their trip to Westbury. After winning the home fixture, 4.5-1.5, they lost the return match 4-2. Cuer again came out on top in his match, this time pairing up with Mike Weeks to win 3&2, while the Curtis brothers, Jack and Reg, won 2&1. White and John Williams were narrowly beaten, finishing one-down, while the pairings of Rowell and Woodruff and Edgell and Nowell both lost 3&3, and Cyril Blacker and John Bendle were beaten 5&3.
Fosseway’s oldest member, Geoff Weeks, celebrated his 95th birthday with a party at the Centurion, and his fellow golfers joined with his family and friends to mark the big day. Although he is no longer seen so often on the golf course, his competitive nature is still very much in evidence on the pool table, and he remains a popular member of the Seniors’ section.
