Mendip’s Club Captain, David Williams, put on an excellent occasion for his Captain’s Day, with strong support from the club.
In all a full field of 184 members took part playing in teams of four. Second place, on countback in the Ladies’ event, was the low handicap team of Jan Fukuyama, Gill Brown, Vi Hayes and Jinhee Page, with an excellent 98 points. However, at the other end of the handicap scale and winning by a mere sixteen points, came Liz Rose, Nichola Croft, Sue McFerran and Chris Atkinson with 114.
The Men’s event saw third place again decided on countback with Rob Ware, Tony Taylor, Peter Restorick and John Adby scoring 100. In second place with 102 were Spencer Pocock, Ian Fairclough, Steve Whalen and Jamie Phillips, but clear winners with 110 were S. Coate, R. Gumbleton, R. Millard and T. Scriven.
The Men’s First Team gained a very welcome win in their latest Bristol and District League One Fixture when entertaining Long Ashton. The final score was 3½–1½ with Mendip’s wins coming from Stuart Ponfield and Tom Lowe, Ian Fairclough and Jordan Vaughan and from First Team debutant, Danny Middle, who was partnered by Matt Rawlings.
Mendip’s C team in the Avalon League beat Cricket St Thomas 3–2, which puts them in a strong position, fifteen points ahead with one game to play, although Burnham have a game in hand. Mendip’s points came from Malcolm Srawley and Chris Butland, Wayne Black and Dan Allen and Ryan Salisbury and Tony Logan. Scott Butland, partnered by Spencer Pocock, suffered his first defeat in eleven matches, a fine record in this, his first year at Mendip.
The Ladies played their third ‘mix-up’ event of the season which consists of teams drawn from each handicap division. In third place were Jenny Merrett, Anne Collins and Pauline Williams, with 62 points, in second place Jean Padfield, Carol Mosley and Wendy Norman, with 68 and just winning by a point, Chris Williams, Nichola Croft and May Curtis. Congratulations also go to Karen Cookson, who came first in Division Two of the Somerset County Bronze event.
The Ladies’ Alliance B Team visited Shirehampton, eventually going down to a 4–10 defeat. Mendip’s wins came from Jenny Merrett and Linda Brobson. The Ladies’ Friendly Team visited Wells and secured a 3½–1½ win. Mendip’s points came from Team Captain, Sandie Roper and Wendy Norman, Carol Mosley and Eileen Masters and Anne Collins and Elaine Richardson.
The Seniors visited Wedmore and met defeat, 2–5. Successful for Mendip were the pairings of Terry Russell and Bob Smallcombe and John Stembridge and Alan Evans-Jones.
