The first Wells Seniors’ Medal of 2016 took place recently, with an excellent turn-out of players braving the new season and the April weather. Conditions were not easy and the scoring told the story. This was despite playing off yellow tees to compensate for the early season conditions.

The winner, with a fantastic score of 88, nett 67, was Bernard Young, who clearly likes tough conditions and made light of them with aplomb. Second place went to Piers Dalby with a 92, nett 71 score. Alan Bancroft and Terry Pearce both shot a commendable nett 72, with Pearce prevailing on countback to take third place.

The weather held fine for Wells Seniors’ visit to Clevedon. George Davis and Ron Davey had the only Wells win and Glyn Hallet and Len Sweales managed a half. Wells lost 6 1/2 to 1 1/2, but three matches did go to the last green.

Wells Stragglers played their first match of the season on Sunday against Worlebury in which a winning result was achieved by 3.5 to 1.5.

Mansfield and Leigh halved, Searle and Michell Lost 3–1, Porter (Acting Captain) and McKay won 4–3, McCollum and Baker won 3–1 and finally Hockey and Young won by 1.

With strong winds effecting play, many balls were hitting many trees, but at least the rain which was forecast held off. Nearest the Pin in two was won by John Hockey, who donated his winnings to the Club Charity, Heads Up.

The mixed Easter Greensomes were played in glorious sunshine. Phyllis Lewison and Bill McCollum won with forty points, closely followed by Barbara Harris and Steve Bocquet, with 38 points. In third place were Cath Levell and Peter Bartholomew.
