With heavy rain overnight and a poor weather forecast, many Wells golfers braved the rain and did not let the weather dampen their spirit for the Brittany Ferries Stableford competition.

David Hayward and Ron Johnson both played an excellent game and tied with 37 points. Hayward had a better back nine to win the event on countback. Paul Hembury was third with 34 points. Seven players shared the two spot pot: Alan Todd, David Hayward, Tim Taylor, Ivan Love, Terry Searle, Richard Birch and Vic Burgoyne.

The Avalon team played their first home game of the season in lovely spring conditions, with Wells coming out on top against Long Sutton.

Simon Jackson and Pete Walker, first out, strolled to a 4&2 win. Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry gained a 2&1 win. Jason Huck and Pascal Norman won two up and Mark Western and Ian Burr played a tight game finishing on the eighteenth with their opponents holing out a long putt for par to win the hole and game one up. John Baker and Colin Mantle lost 4&3.

Good luck to Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry, who will represent Wells in the Mockerage Cup at Mendip on Saturday.

A dry, warm day saw the winners and runners-up of the Ladies’ medals from last year compete for the coveted Palmer Cup, the first medal competition of the year. There were many good scores, with Phyllis Lewison coming in first with nett 74 and Cath Levell was runner-up with nett 75.
