The annual running of the Anniversary Cup at Mendip saw 121 men competing with still only eight players managing to better par.
Division Three went to Daniel Cottle, with a net 69, with Ashley Warman second with 70 after countback from Jim Scott. Division Two was won by Guillaume Lesage, with 69 after countback from Clayton Merrett and Robert Cook. Division One saw a win for Nick Cox with 70 with Matt Rawlings second, with 71 after countback from Paul Lewis. However, the outstanding round of the day came from the Chairman of the competitions and handicaps committee, Ryan Sainsbury. Playing off five, Ryan carded an outstanding net 65 to lift the Trophy and earn himself a handicap reduction to 3.8.
The Juniors held their championships with gross, net and a 9 hole category.
The 18 hole medal was won by 3 handicap, Thomas Richardson, with a gross 85, one shot ahead of his sister, Ffion, who won the net prize. The 18 hole Stableford went to Henry Lewer, with 32 points, a point ahead of Ben Roberts and Ollie Roach won the 9 hole event.
The Ladies’ Stableford saw a very close finish with only two points covering the top nine players. After a five-way tie, Lynne Vowles came out on top with 29 points, with Chris Down second and Anita Butcher third.
The Ladies’ Inter Club Team are finding the division that they are in just too tough and went down to a heavy defeat when visiting Taunton & Pickeridge, their sole win coming from Anita Butcher.
The friendly team fared little better when going down to a 4–1 defeat to Wedmore, Mendip’s win coming from Sue Needham and Caroline Simper. Ten Ladies’ Past Captains held their annual meet, a smaller number than usual due to injuries and holidays. Hilary Rowdon won the competition with 32 after countback from Carol Curtis.
The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin was won by Ellen Reakes, with Chris Butland second and Tony Taylor third.
The Seniors’ Avalon Team went down 3–2 after a very tight battle with Wedmore. John Ellis, Team Captain and Kevin Carmody won their match, as did Chris Betenson/Seniors’ Captain Alan Edwards. There was much comment from the opposition about Chris’ handicap and that was before he sank his second shot on the 14th for an Eagle!
The Seniors’ Friendly team continued their busy schedule, firstly entertaining Clevedon, resulting in a Mendip win 4½–1½.
Wins from Bryan Lewis/Alan Snow, Kevin Carmody/Peter Rummings, Andy Griffiths/Hugh Rowdon and Andy Frampton/Alan Edwards with Martin Osborne/David Jukes gaining a half. All enjoyed the trip although the result went against Mendip 1½–4½.
Mendip’s win came from Selwyn Rees/Derek Bellew with Phil Butcher/Alan Edwards gaining a half. Tony Williams
