Tom Roberts, Juniors’ Captain and his playing partner, Ed Higgs, were in excellent form and beat off stiff opposition to win Wells Golf Club’s Pro Day with 44 points in this Four Ball Better Ball competition.
Jack Heginbotham, Head Professional, held the annual competition, which was supported by Callaway. The standard of golf was very impressive, with seventeen groups posting scores of forty points and above! With these first-rate scores posted, there was a buzz in the clubhouse to see who was in the prizes, with Trevor Padfield achieving a hole in one during his round. In second place were Dave Hayward and Geoff Ead; third were Peter Ramsay and Alan Todd; fourth were Martyn Pugh and Warren Hamilton and in fifth place were Simon Jackson and Pete Walker. Just one point separated the first six teams.
Wells Seniors visited Kingsdown, where they failed to get to grips with the greens and the hard running ground and were solidly beaten 6–1.
They fared better in their home matches against Wedmore, winning 5&2 and Filton winning 4½–2½, when Dave Hayward and Jon Mackness won their game. The fifth was halved with birdies and the match went to the last putt on the eighteenth. At Long Sutton, the team lost in a tight game. Colin Wilde, a late stand-in, had a run of sinking long putts but this was not enough to win his match.
The Ladies Alliance team have played at Saltford where they gained nine points and at home to Henbury when they gained ten points. The Ladies Nannette Barber Cup was won by Chris Gee.
