There are two further Championships to report on from Mendip Golf Club, the Ladies and Juniors.
Most Competitors in the Ladies Championship found scoring difficult over the two days. However, as to be expected the title went to Aimee Sawyer who playing off a handicap of +2 put together 2 Gross scores of 72 (a total of 6 under CSS over the 2 days) to win by a clear margin. 2nd place went to 14 year-old, Ellen Reakes, who put together a very creditable Gross 164 score. Edwina Willis came 3rd and Jinhee Page 4th.
The Net Championship went to 10-year-old Ffion Richardson, playing off 20 who put together a tremendous score of Net 150, just 2 over CSS. Very well played Ffion. Edwina Willis, playing off 15, came second just three shots behind with Elaine P Richardson 3rd. Aimee came into the Championship weekend having just finished a very creditable 30th out of 70 in the English Amateur Match Play event held at Woodhall Spa.
The Junior Club Championships saw the main event over 18 holes with a separate 9 hole event for the higher handicaps. The 9 hole competition was won by Grant Jeffrey with 15 points with Harry Bassett 2nd with 13. The 18 hole Stableford event for those with handicaps over 24 was won by Ben Roberts with 34 points with Seth Locke 2nd with 33. The Net Championship went to Ffion Richardson with a fine net 70 with Daisy Jeffrey 2nd with 74 and Ellen Reakes 3rd with 76. The Gross prize went to Thomas Richardson, who now becomes Junior Club Champion, who scored Gross 84 just beating Ellen Reakes with 85, Callum Whittaker was 3rd with 88 after count back from Sam Pepler.
The Mid week Stableford attracted 88 entrants. Division 1 was won by Martin Myers with 39 points with Joe Reilly 2nd with 38 and Simon Brand 3rd on count back with 37. Division 2 went to Sam Brown (13) with a tremendous 44 points including 25 points on the front 9, Justin Gardiner was 2nd with 38 points and Shaun Rich 3rd with 37. However, the story of the Competition was in Division 3. 12 year old Ben Roberts joined Mendip in November 2018 together with his younger brother Alex as part of Stuart Disney’s Junior Academy. Working hard at his game Ben has a current handicap of 37. However off the White Tees Ben recorded a Gross 91 and that included 2 x 8’s on the Front 9. However this gave him an amazing 52 points and a handicap reduction to 25! Well done Ben. Freddie Lenihan was 2nd with 40 and Matthew McKay 3rd with 38.
